Thoughts on What is Being?
Author: Robert Stead
Thoughts on ¡¥what is being¡¦....
We can think of ¡¥what is being¡¦ as asking the question of ourselves, ¡§what is the meaning of being for me¡¨?
Being has a tripartite quality:
„P Being in the world
„P Being with
„P Being there
Being in the world is to throw ourselves in to the ¡¥hurly-burly¡¦ of things, to experience our environment. It is to be ¡¥grounded¡¦ in the things around us and be aware of what we come into contact with.
Being with is the sense we have of being with others who are like ourselves. The more we are aware of a sense of community the more we can begin to answer the question ¡§what is being¡¨?
Being there has three elements within it:
„P Being with a past
„P Being in the present
„P Being able to imagine the future
The context our being means that we sense all three simultaneously and each influences the other. Being there might be thought of as a series of layers made up of the past, the present, and the future. In our ¡¥being¡¦ we can move between them in a non-linear fashion. The processualists would take the view that our being is like the layers of an onion, as we peel them back we find out what we truly are.....
¡§You are what we were, and we are what you will be.¡¨
Our being takes two forms:
„P As being ready to hand
„P As being present at hand
The former is when we are aware of all things around us, and we relate everything to everything else. All things are relational and are understood in how they relate to one another. For example a cup sits on a saucer that sits on a table in the room we are standing in. Present at hand is where we 'dissociate' our being from the things around us, we ascribe no meaning to then, we are detached and uninvolved. Yet we are there. For example when we are day dreaming or focused on our inner world.
Being like all things is about establishing equilibrium and being in harmony with nature and the things and people around us. We achieve this by ¡¥aletheia¡¦ which translates to mean ¡¥uncoveredness¡¦. This is when things come into the light of human awareness i.e. ¡¥Being there¡¦. We then have truth which essentially creates human freedom.
By uncovering for ourselves what ¡¥being¡¦ is for us, we are freeing ourselves to do what it is we truly want to do. Professional Life Coaching provides the structure to uncover the truth about ourselves and to help develop this freedom.[Ref: Martin Heidegger (1889-1976)]
